On Tuesday 20 August, 1940, Constable Mackie was off duty at home when he saw smoke coming from a nearby house. He ran to the house, forced the door and immediately found a child inside. After removing the child to the street, he wrapped a wet towel on his head against the extreme heat, and went inside again where he found another child. On being told that there may be another child inside, he again went back inside and found the third child. He carried the child to safety and then got on a bicycle and cycled uphill for 350 yards to the nearest fire alarm to call the Fire Brigade. All the children were unhurt. (London gazette - 12.6.41)
