PETER McGREGOR and ROBERT RATHNEY
On the night of 16 February 1929, Constables Peter McGregor (right) and Robert Rathney (left), both of 'D'
(Southern) Division attended a fire in Kidston Street, Gorbals.
On their arrival they found that the fire had started in a flat on the first floor and spread
quickly to the upper floors and also to the ground floor.
The occupants of the upper floors were afraid to use the stairs, their only means of escape.
Constables McGregor and Rathney rushed up the stairs through the smoke and flames and were
successful in guiding eight persons down the stairs to safety, despite intense heat.
Both constables suffered burns to their faces and hands.
