Murdo Nicholson, a native of Skye, joined the City of Glasgow Police and was stationed in the ‘D’ (Southern) Division.
On 19 November 1965, Constable Nicholson was on patrol when he became aware of a tenement fire at 19 Abbotsford Place, Gorbals, Glasgow. He immediately went to the scene of the fire and entered the building to look for any trapped persons. Despite the intense heat and smoke, he was successful in rescuing a woman from the building and taking him to safety.
For his bravery, Constable Nicholson was awarded the Queen’s commendation for Brave Conduct and the Glasgow Corporation Medal for Bravery.
Constable Nicholson later progressed through the ranks and retired with the rank of Inspector in ‘A’ (Central) Division.
