On 15 January 1971, both officers were on patrol in Gallowgate, Glasgow, when they came upon a youth who was armed with a cleaver. After a violent struggle, the officers were successful in arresting the youth.
I recognition of the bravery of the two constables, they were awarded the Queen’s commendation for Brave Conduct and the Glasgow Corporation Bravery Medal.
