Andrew Nisbet Keith was a native of Dunfermline and joined the City of Glasgow Police in 1897. He was posted to the Northern Division and did not take long to attract the attention of his senior officers due to the number of criminal apprehensions that he made.
He was promoted to Sergeant in the ‘D’ Southern Division in 1902 and and a year later was transferred to the Detective Department as Detective Inspector. He gained the rank of Detective Lieutenant a few years later. He was also awarded the King’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Several years later, at the request of the City Magistrates, the Secretary of State for Scotland created the rank of Detective Superintendent specially for him. This was in recognition of his exceptional record in the investigation of crime and the detection of criminals.
Two years later, Mr Keith, now Assistant Chief Constable, took control of the Glasgow Criminal Investigation Department.
In 1927, he was appointed Chief Constable of Lanarkshire Constabulary a post he held until his retiral in 1945. Read More…….
