Robert McCall joined the City of Glasgow Police and was posted to the ‘A’ (Central) Division.
On 14 November 1947, Constable McCall was on foot patrol in Cleland Street, Glasgow, when he was made aware of a tenement fire at 3 Cleland Street. On his arrival at the scene and, despite the intense heat and thick smoke, he entered the blazing building and was successful in rescuing a man and an elderly woman, taking them to safety.
Shortly after the incident, Constable McCall resigned from the force and the following year, 1948, he was awarded the King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct and the Glasgow Corporation Medal for Bravery.
